WHAT YOU DID: Utilising a rustic cane shed located within one of OSC’s exclusive film locations just north of Port Douglas, our team created the ultimate in juxtapositions. As guests arrived through the dense cane fields, they disembarked their transport to be escorted to a rustic and iron clad working cane shed. Here, surrounded by the machines of working farm equipment, guests enjoyed a selection of canapés accompanied by a signature welcome cocktail created with the local sugar cane. Abruptly, the large trucks parted way, revealing the entry into the night’s dinner locale. Guests were welcomed by beautiful hostesses wearing spectacular customed-designed gowns who escorted them to their seats. An elegant chandelier was the focal point of the room, hanging low above the centre of the long banquet table. Utilising black linens, deep blue velvets, mosaic club lamps and crystals to create an opulent and decadent ambience, soft coloured lighting hues highlighted the chandelier and the rustic walls of the shed. With tractors positioned on the outskirts of the shed reminding guests of their surroundings, the venue was as fabulous in its decadence as it was in its contrast.

SPECIAL TOUCHES: In true OSC style, this was an evening about attention to detail. OSC wanted to take guests out of their comfort zone and allow them to experience the destination in a way that they may not have anticipated. With the entrance to the main dining area being revealed by the tractors, the last thing guests expected to see was such an elegant setting complete with a chandelier. The contrast between the exterior of the venue and that which was created inside was a very special and integral part of the night.

CHALLENGES: The juxtaposition of the venue and the style of the dinner was both a highlight and a challenge. Creating such an opulent setting within a rustic shed was a creative challenge which paid off greatly due to a great team and joint creative vision. As there was no budget for this event, OSC worked with its long-term partners from production, catering and infrastructure suppliers to support OSC with their services to showcase the destination on behalf of the CRCB.Being the final event of the workshop program, buyers had been “on the go” from arrival. Knowing their hectic schedule, OSC wanted to create an event experience that would allow them to sit back relax and enjoy their exclusive surrounds that best showcased the diversity of the destination.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: The challenge of the setting was one which was overcome by simple creative thought. By utilising the great creative team of OSC Cairns, OSC was able to devise a simple yet effective way to create the look OSC was hoping for. The key to this was not overdoing the stylistic elements of the event. The clever use of lighting and key pieces meant that the contrasting elements of the venue versus the style were not competing but simply complemented each other within the space. In terms of the audience, OSC overcame the challenge of creating a memorable experience by creating an event which OSC knew would shine. The opulent and spectacular vision OSC was able to create meant that OSC would overcome this challenge as soon as their guests entered the shed!

CLIENT’S COMMENT: I recently attended the TNQ famil and we were treated to the dinner put on by Off Site Connections at Drumsara. This was more like an experience than a dinner! From the moment the bus pulled up in the middle of the cane fields I knew we were in for a good time...the atmosphere was amazing...the food was as good as you’d get in any 5-star restauant. Thank you for making the night so memorable.
