Perth is one of WA’s biggest assets, and with a splendid skyline that’s home to state-of-the-art facilities, venues and products, this cosmopolitan city is ready-made for incentives and events. And lately the destination has been making waves in terms of securing meeting and incentive business to increase its share of the events market.
A number of major associations, corporates and incentive groups have recently chosen to stage their upcoming events and exhibitions in Perth, including the inaugural GO3 electronic entertainment expo which will be held in April this year. This event is expected to inject more than $4.55 million into the WA economy, and will be held over three days at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.
One recent development that will certainly bring more overseas interest to Perth is the new flights between Perth and Singapore, to be operated by low-cost Singaporean airline, Tiger Airways. Beginning in late-March, an initial four flights a week will commence operation, with increasing daily services predicted from November this year. Return fares are rumoured to start at as little as $300. If this goes forward, WA will be set to benefit from an increase in visitor numbers from markets outside Singapore, as Tiger Airways expands its flights into other emerging markets such as China.
With these and other developments in mind, Executive Chairman for the Perth Convention Bureau (PCB), Graham Muir says he’s very positive about the city’s position in the market going forward, despite the increasingly competitive global environment where destinations around the world are chasing high-yielding business tourism. He expects this current financial year to be a lucrative one for Perth, judging by the destination’s recent success in attracting meeting and incentive business.
Muir reports that the PCB secured meeting and incentive business worth more than $72 million in the 2005/06 financial year, attracting 138 national and international conventions incentive groups during that same period. These results included two of the largest pieces of international incentive travel business ever secured for WA. Mr Muir said these two groups represented 3350 and 3000 participants and alone were expected to generate delegate spends of $7.62 million and $6.68 million respectively.
“This is a great coup for Western Australia and shows that Perth is now on the radar screens for the larger incentive groups that originate out of Asia and have traditionally gone to Sydney and Queensland,” he says.
Aside from its world-class facilities, WA’s biggest selling points to the conference and incentives market could well be its geography and climate. Known for its brilliant blue skies and white sandy beaches, it’s got everything from dolphins at Monkey Mia, the 350-million-year-old Bungle Bungle range and the towering Karri forests of the southwest.

Five conventions that are expected to attract more than 2200 delegates and inject an estimated $3.80 million into the WA economy were secured by the Perth Convention Bureau (PCB) during the final two months of 2006. The conventions are booked to come to WA from 2007 to 2009.
In March this year an estimated 500 medical students are set to invade Mandurah to attend a seven-day conference representing the International Federation of Medical Students Associations General Assemblies. Expected to attract more than 200 delegates from around Australia, the Specialist Breast Care Nurses National Conference has also been secured and will be held in May 2008.
Three 500-delegate conventions have been secured for 2009 – the Australian Council for Educational Research National Conference; the Hire and Rental Association Ltd National Convention and Exhibition; and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners 52nd Annual Scientific Convention.
Bureau Executive Chairman Graham Muir says that it had been pleasing to secure the conferences after what had been a relatively slow start to 2006/07 financial year.
“Our sales results are tracking well at this stage of the financial year and we are confident of reaching our target of securing convention and corporate meetings and incentive business worth more than $55 million for 2006/07,” Mr Muir says.
