The 10 winners were selected from more than 100 student applicants from colleges and universities across Australia. The $3000 per student scholarship is part of a $100,000 cash commitment by Amlink to help raise the standard of event management in this country.
Dimity Johnson, 19, who completed her schooling at MacKillop Catholic College in Canberra, is undergoing an 18-month Diploma in Event Management course at the Canberra Institute of Technology. The scholarship couldn’t have come at a better time.
“I was thrilled to win this scholarship, especially considering the number of applicants. Simply being selected will look good on my résumé,” she said.
“I also found that the process of completing the application made me think about what I wanted to do with my life.”
Dimity has been working with the leading Canberra event management company, Conference Logistics, on a work experience basis for some months. On completion of her course she will join the company in a full-time position.
Trevor Gardiner, managing director of Amlink Technologies, developers of the world’s leading EVENTS computer software, says there’s significant shortage of well trained and motivated young people in the events management sector.
“Event management is certainly becoming a popular career choice, but it’s clear Australia needs to develop smarter and more innovative people to take this industry forward. We were delighted with the quality of the applicants and deciding the successful scholarship winners was quite a challenge,” he says.
“The Amlink Rising Stars program is designed to help our clients get the most from their people and hopefully result in even more committed people following an event management career path.”
Amlink Technologies has sponsored industry executive Debbie Brown to write a rigorous 22 week event management course which will be made available to universities and Colleges of TAFE for incorporation into their training modules.
“We will have an examination at the end of this course that will really test the knowledge and application of the students, so they’ll go out into the market fully prepared to take on the day-to-day planning and management of events,” says Mr Gardiner.
The main elements of the Amlink Technologies “Rising Star Program” for 2007 include:
