This one came to us from an individual who didn’t want to be named… “To hosted buyers who have no opportunity to recommend or influence a client to confirm business to the country hosting the show.  Bloody freeloaders and professional famil goers! Makes me angry to see the amount of money that’s spent by well meaning and extremely generous suppliers in the interest of attracting business when the buyers just don’t fit the profile or have the clients. [I] liked your suggestion about having them contact you to screen applicants – that might sort some of them out!” That last comment followed on from a comment we made about business event exhibitions and the selection of hosted buyers. Having been in the business events industry a long time we think we have a good handle on the who’s who in the industry, and would be more than happy to look over any potential hosted buyer lists exhibitors have in place in an effort to ensure only high quality buyers are hosted at major exhibitions here and internationally.

To Trevor Gardiner and his team at Amlink Technologies for getting behind the business events industry with the Amlink Rising Stars scholarship programme. Ten winners were selected from more than 100 student applicants from colleges and universities across Australia. The $3000 per student scholarship is part of a $100,000 cash commitment by Amlink to help raise the standard of event management in this country. See page 28 for details.

Beware fellow business event travellers when you’re overseas and using your mobile telephone. Two telephone calls from Shanghai to Australia (totalling 30 minutes) cost mice.net editor Brad Foster just under $200. And it appears as if exorbitant global roaming charges aren’t just contained to business travellers. Musician Avril Lavigne admitted recently that she had a mobile phone bill waiting for her at home at the end of a world tour which set her back $30,000. If you have any suggestions on how Avril, Brad, and travellers generally can reduce the cost of their phone calls overseas email brad@mice.net.au.

mice.net hears on that good old-fashioned grapevine that many individuals employed by GET are again gainfully employed for various companies. One can only hope that all outstanding wages and superannuation contributions are forthcoming from GET down the line.
